Handmade by artisans in a tribal village in India, block printing is a revered art form native to Rajasthan, India. It is a painstaking process of labor-intensive steps that requires mastery, especially in wood-block carving  Artisans press the carved wood block with wet dye onto fabric and reapply at precise spots for pattern continuation. The block print artisan partners live in scattered rural villages that are challenged by poverty and lack of infrastructure in their isolated communities. There are few opportunities for jobs in this desert region, where the climate is too dry for agriculture. The co-op partners with an organization that focuses on economic, social and environmental upliftment for these communities and provides development solutions such solar power, education and health care.

Meet the Maker

MATR BOOMIE's mission is to create opportunities for women and minorities in India to help them realize their creative, economic and leadership potential. Since 2006 their network of artisans has grown to empower 20,000 individuals in 40 communities and creates a critical difffference in the lives of the artisans, their families and communities by investing in medical clinics, schools and public health infrastructures.
