Handmade by Kagzis artisans in Rajasthan, India, following a generations-old process. Kagzis are part of a long tradition of handmade paper-making. Since the process is done by hand, it provides work opportunity for many people in this community. Benefits for the artisans include training, micro-finance, education, and health assistance.
Handmade using 100% recycled cotton paper. The process used by Kagzis is tree-free, non-toxic, and conserves and filters water for reuse in irrigation. And with every item purchased with us, a tree is planted in partnership with the National Forest Foundation.
Paper making was invented by the Chinese around105 A.D by Ts'ai Lun. Ts'ai Lun broke the bark of a mulberry tree into fibers and pounded them into a sheet. Later it was discovered that the quality of paper could be much improved with the addition of rags hemp and old fish nets to the pulp. The paper was soon widely used in China and spread to the rest of world through the Silk Road.
