Soap making as we know it today began in the 7th century when Arab chemists created rich varieties of perfumed and colored soaps in both liquid and solid forms. They were the first to use vegetable oils in soap production, and even had a special soap for shaving. These Middle Eastern techniques spread and by the 8th century, goat fat soap was prevalent in Italy and Spain, while olive oil soap became popular in France.
