An excavation of ancient Babylon revealed evidence that Babylonians were making soap around 2800 B.C. and were the first to master the art of soap making. They made soap from fats boiled with ashes and used to clean textiles, as well as medicinally for at least 5000 years. It wasn't until 1800 the method of using glycerin, fats and acid was discovered by French soap makers and marked the beginning of modern soap making.
