Mitra Bali, a nonprofit, nongovernmental organization, functions loosely as a cooperative representing artisans who make wood, silver, bamboo, coconut, ceramic and other handicrafts in Bali. They  work with producers who support gender equity, provide healthy working conditions, use environmentally sustainable materials, and do not exploit child labor or women to provide low-interest loans.
Mitra Bali also supports a reforestation program, an environmental initiative, as well as an effort to prevent artisans from selling their land. With every item purchased with us, a tree is planted in partnership with the National Forest Foundation.
The story of how the word "sterling" is rooted in 12th-century lore. As payment for English cattle, an association of eastern Germans compensated the British with silver coins dubbed "Easterlings." Eventually, the Easterling was widely accepted as a standard of English currency and was abbreviated to "Sterling," which is now used to refer to the highest grade of silver metal.
